The opportunity
Inspired by the success of Greetings from Queens, Raising Cane’s invited me to create a large-scale architectural artwork for its new Jamaica, Queens location. Rather than prescribing a concept, the team encouraged an art-first approach asking me to explore the neighborhood and create a design that reflected the optimism, energy, and community spirit of Jamaica while complementing the restaurant’s bold visual identity.
The approach
The project began with listening. I spent time walking the neighborhood, revisiting York College, meeting with the construction team, and studying the evolving architecture of the space to understand how the artwork could become part of the building.
The final composition was developed digitally as a site-specific architectural installation. One panel transforms the word JAMAICA into a visual journey through the neighborhood’s culture and history, while the other reimagines the Raising Cane’s mascot carrying the Statue of Liberty’s torch above a passing subway, bringing together themes of music, transportation, connection, and community before being fabricated as a permanent architectural vinyl installation.
The outcome
Completed in just two weeks, the installation transformed the restaurant into a vibrant celebration of Jamaica, Queens that feels inseparable from its surroundings. Welcoming hundreds of guests each day, the artwork demonstrates how thoughtful, site-specific design can strengthen a brand while creating a memorable sense of place that is uniquely connected to the neighborhood it serves.
