The opportunity

Vornado Realty wanted to transform the Rego Center atrium into a more welcoming destination while celebrating the diversity of the surrounding neighborhood. Beyond the permanent artwork, they sought meaningful ways to engage local residents and encourage a sense of ownership within the space.

The Approach

Inspired by the architectural rhythm and cultural diversity of Queens, the mural was designed as a full-building wall composition that transforms the atrium into a vibrant landmark visible from Queens Boulevard. Working closely with Vornado Realty, Urban Edge, Consigli Construction, architects, and building management, the project required careful coordination of design, scaffolding, and construction logistics. The mural was further activated through a series of community paint days and pop-up art installations, inviting local residents to become part of the transformation.

The Outcome

The completed mural established a new visual landmark within Rego Center while the accompanying community events welcomed hundreds of participants of all ages. Together, the project transformed a commercial space into a place of creativity, conversation, and neighborhood pride.

“Rob’s mural speaks to everything that the shopping center strives to be for the communities it serves: a vibrant gathering place where people can work, shop, dine, and relax together. We are especially excited about Rob’s plan to have members of the community paint alongside him, making the project a true collaboration.”
